Tremors of Indonesian quake felt in Malaysia
Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak felt the tremors of an earthquake which hit Indonesia today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported.
The moderate earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, rocked northern Sumatera at 7.41 am, it said in a statement.
The department said the epicentre of the quake was 100km north of Langsa, Indonesia, and 233km southwest of Langkawi, Kedah.
In PENANG, the tremors were felt particularly by the early-bird office workers at the 65-storey Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) in George Town.
A spokesman of the security division at the complex said the tremors were felt by people in the upper floors. "Office workers on the third floor, for example, did not feel anything at all," he said.
Komtar houses various government departments, including the office of the chief minister, several offices of private organisations and shopping outlets.
A spokesman of the Fire and Rescue Department said it received a call from a member of the public enquiring whether there had been an earthquake.
