Two crew members died and two others were injured in a fire on an LPG tanker which occurred about 26 nautical miles northeast of Kuala Terengganu, yesterday.
The dead in the 6pm incident were identified as Myanmar national Zaw Myo Htut, 23, and South Korean Song Oh Weon, 56, and the injured as Myanmar Khine Zin Lin, 28, and Chow Tea Won, 64, from South Korea.
Kuala Terengganu Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director of operations, Mohammad Zainal said six of the agency's personnel were rushed to the scene upon receiving a report on the fire onboard the vessel.
However, he said, upon arrival, the team found the fire had been put out but two crew members had perished and another two injured, and they were rushed to the Pulau Kambing MMEA base.
"The injured were then taken to Sultanah Nur Zahirah (HSNZ) Hospital, here, for further treatment while the two bodies were sent to the same hospital," he said when met by reporters, today.
Mohammad said the tanker had left South Korea with 23 crew members and was believed to be heading for Thailand when the fire broke out.
He said the cause of the fire was still being investigated by the relevant authority.
