Two Malaysians held for allegedly smuggling drugs to Bali

Two Malaysian nationals have been arrested by the Indonesian Customs and Excise officers at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs onto the island, The Jakarta Post reported Friday.

Muhammad Shahzadi and Aliff Affan were arrested upon their arrival at the airport for the possession of 70 grams of marijuana and a small amount of methamphetamines hidden inside socks and a black bag.

The two suspects were boarding on Malaysia Airlines flight MH851 from Kuala Lumpur.

"They (allegedly) hid the marijuana inside their socks. Meanwhile, the crystal meth, ecstasy and Happy 5 pills were found in Aliff's luggage," Ngurah Rai Customs and Excise chief Budi Harjanto as quoted by The Jakarta Post.

According to Budi, Shahzadi and Affan showed suspicious behavior when their luggage passed through an X-ray machine, prompting the customs officers to conduct a further check on their bags, followed by body searches.

Both suspects and evidence were handed over to the police. If found guilty, they could be charged under Article 113 (1) of the 2009 Narcotics law and face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and Rp 10 billion (RM3.2 million) in fines each.
