Two main roads in Sungai Petani namely Jalan Sekerat starting from the junction of Jalan Taman Semangat and Jalan Kuala Ketil will be closed from today to Feb 11 from 5pm to 1am in conjunction with Thaipusam celebrations.
Kedah police chief Datuk Asri Yusoff said the two roads would be temporarily closed to enable the chariot and kavadi processions to reach the Sri Subramaniya Swami Devasthanam temple and Muniswarar temple located along the two roads.
"To ensure the Thaipusam celebration is celebrated peacefully, 391 police personnel will be stationed at strategic locations to ensure public safety and order," he said in a statement.
Asri said the Kuala Muda police had set up two tents to provide free food and drinks to visitors during Thaipusam to promote a good relationship between police and the people, especially Indian community.
In this regard, a notice of temporary terminal for express bus operators had been issued to pick up and drop passengers during Thaipusam in Sungai Petani from Ukir Mall to Kampung Baru in front of Ambank. - BERNAMA
