"My son was very excited about the trip and him being selected as the group leader, we did not expect this tragedy," said Md Shukri, the father of Muhammad Kamil, 22, who was killed in Janda baik today.

Muhammad Kamil and a university mate were killed when a tree fell on a group of 140 students and four lecturers of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, Selangor, who were camping there. The group was there to carry out survival activities at Lata Charok waterfall in Janda Baik.

"As a father, I am devastated, but as a Muslim, I have to be patient and accept it," said Md Shukri, 52, a lecturer at Setapak Vocational College, Kuala Lumpur.

The body of Muhammad Kamil, was claimed by the family at 8.15pm for burial at the Ibukota Muslim cemetery in Setapak last night.

Meanwhile, in Sungai Besar, Selangor, the remains of another victim, Noorain Mohtar, 23, was buried at the Masjid Makmuriah Muslim cemetery here Saturday afternoon.


Noorain''s mother, Aminah Rusmi said last spoke to her daughter on Thursday and could not belief that she was now gone forever.

Norain''s father, Mohtar Mad Lani, 63, hoped that UiTM would investigate the incident apart from reviewing the programme module.

Meanwhile, UiTM expressed its condolences and sadness over the incident which killed two of its students and left several others injured.

UiTM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Hassan Said said the university had contacted the families of those killed in the incident .

He said the university would contribute RM10,000 to each of the family, including RM3,000 to help with the burial expenses.

"Students who were not injured were brought back to campus in four buses," said Hassan and requested the public to not spread pictures or speculate on the incident out of respect for the families of the victims. - BERNAMA
