WASHINGTON: Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, held a positive meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday, focusing on efforts to support Malaysian industries and exporters amid ongoing trade tensions.

Tengku Zafrul shared the outcome of the meeting shortly after the session, describing the engagement as constructive and forward-looking.

“Alhamdulillah, we have just concluded our meeting with USTR Ambassador Greer. During the discussion, we touched on issues related to tariffs and took the opportunity to shed light on the strong economic relationship between the United States and Malaysia,” said Tengku Zafrul.

“I believe the meeting was indeed positive. They listened, and they agreed to continue discussions with the senior management of USTR and our own senior officials from Malaysia,” he added.

However, the Minister did not disclose specific details regarding Malaysia’s proposals related to tariffs aimed at addressing the trade deficit between Malaysia and the United States.

“These offers are part of confidential discussions between Malaysia and the United States. What I can assure is that the talks are centered on assisting Malaysian industries and exporters,” he said.

He added that both countries have agreed to continue discussions at a higher level, with another round of talks scheduled next month involving senior officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and Malaysia’s trade delegation.
