Three men and a Vietnamese woman have been remanded for four days from today to facilitate investigation into an attack on a Uber driver who was claimed to have sexually assaulted the Vietnamese passenger at Paya Terubong here last Tuesday.
Penang CID chief SAC Zainol Samah said the three men, aged between 28 and 32, were arrested in Paya Terubong and George Town yesterday.
"The three men admitted that they were involved in the beating up of the Uber driver and with their arrest it will enable police to complete their investigation," he told Bernama here today.
He said the Vietnamese woman was detained for further investigation into allegations that she was molested by the Uber driver.
Zainol said the 43-year-old woman's mobile phone was being checked d to obtain evidence of the alleged sexual assault as she claimed she had recorded the incident.
Zainol said police believed that the case could be solved following the arrest of six men, including those arrested on Wednesday, for their involvement in beating up the 29-year-old Uber driver.
Meanwhile, Northeast District Police chief Supt Anuar Omar said two mobile phones seized in the incident had been sent for forensic analysis but no report has been received so far.
He said police were completing investigation into the incident before referring the case to the deputy public prosecutor.
Yesterday, three men, including the Vietnamese woman's husband and the Uber driver, were remanded for four days to facilitate investigation into the case.
The Uber driver and Vietnamese woman are being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault or use of criminal force with intent to outrage a person's modesty while the six men are being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
In the incident, a Uber driver suffered injuries to the head, arms and left leg after he was thrashed by more than 10 men for having allegedly tried to molest a Vietnamese female passenger.
