UEM Builders Bhd today clarifed that the company is not the main contractor for the Second Penang Bridge.

According to UEM Builders in a statement, the company is only responsible for the superstructure works of approach spans on the bridge (Package 2) and is not involved in constructing other parts of the bridge.

"Thus it has no relation to the contractor appointed to construct Package 3A, the Batu Maung Interchange," the company said.

In a separate email reply, UEM Builders said it was awarded the works of constructing the bridge superstructure comprising casting and erection of 8,092 segmental box girders.

"Each segment is approximately 3 metres high by 4 metres long and 14 metres wide at an average weight between 70 tonnes and 110 tonnes.

"Each segment has to be individually cast and matched up to the segments adjacent to it.

"The casting process for each segment takes between 24 hours and 72 hours depending on the type of segment to be cast," it said.
