Just like its predecessors, the new Golf R continues Volkswagen’s legacy in transplanting the latest advanced racing technology into a series of vehicles. It also comes with a whole host of enhanced tech and the safety features have been improved as well.

Tightly packaged with state-of-the-art technology, the new Golf R now rides on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, enabling simple integration of alternative drives in the future. MQB’s lightweight construction reduced the Golf R’s weight by up to 46 kg.

The new Golf R has a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged direct petrol injection engine hidden under its bonnet. Couple it with a 6-speed DSG, the hatchback car produces an impressive 280PS. The “R” is capable of producing a maximum torque of 380Nm kicking in from a low 1750rpm. This enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in just 5seconds.

To ensure that unrivalled control when on the road, the Golf R transfers engine power to the road via a permanent all-wheel drive system; in this case, it is the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling.

You would be interested to know that with the combination of TSI and DSG technology, the “R” is frugal on fuel consumption. At only 6.9 litres per 100kph on the combined cycle, the new “R” is more fuel efficient than its predecessor.
