UMNO expected to postpone party elections

KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO is expected to postpone its elections scheduled to be held this year, the Suara.TV portal reported.

The report quoting a source informed that the postponement was proposed in preparation for the general election which is expected to be held after the emergency period ends on August 1.

The source explained that the motion to postpone the UMNO 2021 Election was submitted at the UMNO Supreme Working Council (MKT) meeting in Janda Baik, Pahang on February 19.

However, discussion and decision on the motion were postponed to after the UMNO 2020 General Assembly which will take place at the end of the month.

According to the UMNO Constitution, the MKT has the power to postpone the election for up to 18 months from the date the party election should be held.

Earlier, several UMNO leaders including the president, deputy president and secretary-general stressed that elections will be held this year.

The UMNO elections should be held every three years with the last time UMNO held one on June 30, 2018. The current term of the UMNO leadership will end on June 30, 2021.

If there is no postponement, the election process must be done before July 2021.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has committed to dissolve Parliament as soon as the Emergency order is terminated.

However, there is no certainty whether the emergency will be extended after August or terminated to open the way for the 15th General Election to be held.
