KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO leaders are seen to be overly self-centric to the extent of not opening opportunities for others, especially the young, to hold positions in the country's leadership.
UMNO’s veteran politician, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah or Ku Li said this nature of exclusivity should not be inculcated because it will close the door for any reform.
“Apparently, UMNO is too exclusive. Many leaders in UMNO only think of themselves.
"I'm sorry for touching on this. This is not my opinion alone. Even outsiders think so,” he said in an exclusive interview with Astro AWANI on Monday.
He added that this selfishness occurs for several reasons, among them the scramble for positions among members.
"Everyone wants to be a minister, everyone wants to be a senior. (They) do not want to open opportunities to others.
“This exclusivity is not only for positions, role but also material.
"(It is) materialistic gain that they are scrambling for, chasing for them. This is something that is looked down upon by the general public," he said.
