Umno today questioned PAS' sincerity in wanting to implement the hudud law in Kelantan, whether it was for the sake of Islam or merely for purpose of getting political support.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this following a statement by DAP leader, Teresa Kok, who claimed that PAS wanted to implement the hudud law to avoid losing the Malay support.

She made the statement after a meeting with Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamad Amar Nik Abdullah last Tuesday.

" If what is said by Kok is true that it is to trap Umno and merely to achieve PAS' political objective, then the hudud law that will be implemented and the intention to get support from Umno, are political tactics that have to re-evaluated by all Muslims in Malaysia," he told a media conference here.

Ahmad Zahid, who is Home Minister, said Umno would study the statements made by PAS leaders on the party's intention to implement hudud.

Umno, he said, had never rejected hudud and supported the proposal to implement it as long as it is based on the true teachings of Islam.

On a book, "Perempuan Nan Bercinta" by Faisal Tehrani, which was banned by the Home Ministry last week, purportedly for promoting the Syiah teaching, Ahmad Zahid said it was to prevent the spread of the Syiah teaching in the country.

He said the ministry had obtained the views of the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) before making the decision to ban the book.

The 410-page book, written in the Malay language and published by the Malaysian National Institute of Translation (ITNM), is about a professor who befriended a human right activist and they both debated and discussed various issues.
