University of Malaya is 59th in QS world ranking

University of Malaya (UM) has been ranked 59th in the Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS-WUR) 2021, climbing 11 spots from last year’s placing.

The university achieved an overall score of 70.1, an improvement of 4.5 per cent from last year.

UM continues to demonstrate a marked improvement in its global standing over the years, from 167 in 2014 to its current position placing it among the top five per cent of the 1,002 institutions ranked by QS-WUR.

In a statement, UM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Hashim said the results were recognition of UM being a high-calibre research and educational institution.

“UM’s goal is, and has always been, to strive for excellence by benchmarking itself against outstanding universities worldwide with a view to uplift Malaysian higher education as well as to enhance its reputation as a global institution of higher learning,” he said in a statement today.

QS-WUR uses six indicators to compile the ranking which measures academic reputation (40 per cent), employer reputation (10 per cent), faculty student (20 per cent), citations per faculty (20 per cent), and five per cent each for international faculty ratio and international student ratio.
