Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) has announced its special vehicle registration number plate series 'UTHM' will be going on sale to generate income.

UTHM Centre for Waqf and Endowment director Prof Dr Wan Zahari Wan Yusoff said the initiative was in line with the government's recommendation for every public university to raise its own fund.

He said the initiative, which began in February, was aimed at reducing the financial burden and dependency of the public higher education institutions in Malaysia.

"Bids for this series involving 9,999 number plates could be placed via e-bidding and the numbers are offered to UTHM staff, alumni and students, as well as the public.

"The UTHM special number plate has been registered with the Road Transport Department (RTD) in Johor Bahru on June 30," he said in a statement, today.

Wan Zahari said interested parties could obtain the special number plate by placing their bids at ebida.uthm.edu.my.

He said the centre also have other strategic plans to generate income for the university and such revenues would be channelled to UTHM Endowment Fund.

In July 2018, then-Education Minister, Dr Maszlee Malik announced that the ministry and the Transport Ministry had agreed to issue special number plates as a form of additional funding for the universities.

Other than UTHM, other public universities have announced the availability of their special number plate series including Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
