Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has always been aware of the problems faced by students who are in financial difficulties and has ensured that they are provided with the necessary assistance.
Its vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar said in addition to aid from zakat collection, UTM had also provided special loans to students in need.
"Every year a total of 900 students who qualify receive aid from zakat collection. Apart from that loans of up to RM500 are provided through special funds to students who share with us their predicament," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing with Tokyo City University of Japan, here Tuesday.
Wahid said UTM also ran a foster parent project among its staff to assist students with financial difficulties.
UTM on Monday launched a 'Because We Care Chancellor's Fund' inspired by the Sultanah of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, to help students from poor families.
Wahid said Raja Zarith Sofiah, who is also UTM Chancellor, would donate RM50,000 to get the ball rolling and the funds collected would be distributed to help students who had been identified in need of help.
Commenting on the MOU signed Tuesday, Wahid said it was aimed at strengthening relations between the two universities through student exchange and joint research programmes.
"With the collaboration with Tokyo City University, more UTM students will be sent to Japan," he added.
