The Terengganu Veterinary Services Department today started giving antibiotics to 58 buffaloes belonging to Muhammad Syukur Khamis' family.

Its director Dr Mohd Termizi Ghazali said the antibiotics injection was to prevent secondary infections and increase their resistance to diseases.

"If a buffalo is already infected with the disease, antibiotics will only slow down the dying process. The rest depends on the buffalo's resilience," he told Bernama when contacted.

The media reported the death of 52 buffaloes belonging to the family of 15-year-old Muhammad Syukur also known as the 'Kampung Boy', believed to have been due to haemorrhagic septicaemia.

Muhammad Syukur became a worldwide sensation among photographers a few years ago for his prowess in interacting with the over 100 buffaloes reared by his father.

A picture of him with a herd of the animals went viral on social media after it was voted best picture in Asia besides being shortlisted as among the top 20 photographs in the world.
