Water treatment plants closed yesterday back in operation - LUAS

The four water treatment plants which were closed yesterday due to the oil spill in Sungai Selangor have resumed operation in stages since early Saturday.

Selangor Water Management Board (LUAS) director Md Khairi Selamat said efforts had been made to clean the oil in the river.

"At about 1am today, I was informed the four plants have begun operation, although not fully," he said when contacted by Bernama.

The affected treatment plants are Sungai Selangor Fasa 1 (SSP1), Sungai Selangor Fasa 2 (SSP2), Sungai Selangor Fasa 3 (SSP3) and the Rantau Panjang plant

Meanwhile, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) Assistant General Manager Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Priscilla Alfred said although the plants had resumed operation, it would take some time for the water supply to be restored.

In an related development, Alam Flora Sdn Bhd today denied claims, which had been posted on Facebook and Twitters, as well as through the short messaging service (SMS), that the company was responsible for the diesel oil spill in Sungai Selangor.

In a statement issued here, the company described the allegation made against Alam Flora as an act by irresponsible quarters.

In the 8am incident yesterday, a tanker lorry carrying diesel skidded into Sungai Selangor, causing an oil spillage in the river.

The incident forced the closure of four treatment plants which supply water to consumers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
