Bersih 2.0 chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said they have nothing to do with Anonymous Malaysia, a hacker group which has threatened to hack into systems of government entities.

The threats are said to take place on the same date of Bersih 4 rally, August 29 and 30.

The group has also claimed support for Bersih 4, Maria said.

“We however do not condone, and must condemn the threats issued by this so called group of hackers who have misused Bersih 4’s campaign in order to further their own agenda, whatever that may be,” she said in a statement.

“BERSIH 2.0 does not agree nor tolerate with vicious attacks, either physical or virtual, towards a democratically elected government, however flawed the electoral system might have been,” she added.

Maria also called on the group to stop misusing the Bersih 4 campaign and advised them to not carry out their threat which will only jeopardize the rally.

She also urged the police to take immediate action over the matter.

“Otherwise, BERSIH 2.0 has no other choice but to believe that such act of unknown individuals unaffiliated to us, is merely a stunt to put the campaign towards institutional reform in jeopardy; orchestrated by those who might be affected by the success of our campaign,” she said.

Yesterday, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau has called on all entities under the Critical National Information Infrastructure to beef up cyber security to protect themselves against hackers.

As the ministry responsible for ensuring Malaysia's cyberspace is secure against cyber threats, MOSTI (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation) through CyberSecurity Malaysia and MIMOS Berhad (MIMOS) is continuing to take proactive measures in combating cyber threats," he said.
