Whale carcass: Histopathology test result only be ready in two to three weeks
Fishermen on Feb 10 found the whale carcass in the shallow water along Pantai Sarang Buaya near Batu Pahat.
The histopathology test results on the whale carcass found at Sungai Buaya, Batu Pahat will only be known after two to three weeks.
The tests were carried out to determine the cause of death and to check if there was any prior illness.
Johor Fishery Department director Munir Mohd Nawi said the post-mortem which began at 11am today was to determine if the whale had consumed anything that had led to its death.
“Post-mortem results will be known in a while but the histopathology test will take time,” he said.
After the post-mortem, the whale’s bones will be kept in a gallery temporarily at the Fishery Complex in Tampoi, Johor Baharu.
The gallery will also be used as a platform to educate the public on the endangered marine species.
Munir said there are 15 species of whales found in Malaysian waters.
Fishermen on Feb 10 found the whale carcass in the shallow water along Pantai Sarang Buaya near Batu Pahat. The whale is believed to be the same whale beached in Rambah Pontian Island few days ago.
The carcass was later taken to the Department of Fisheries Batu Pahat for post-mortem.
The whale is believed to have swam as far as 90 nautical miles from the coast Rambah Pontian before being stranded in the waters of Sungai Nibong Batu Pahat.
