Wisma Putra still verifying asylum seeker, Ali's 'arrest' by Interpol

Wisma Putra is still verifying information about activist Ali Abdul Jalil’s 'arrest' by Interpol in Sweden and is expected to arrive home, today.

"We are verifying the information," said a representative from Wisma Putra when contacted by Astro AWANI here today.

The official also said that they have contacted the the Swedish consulate but there was no information about his arrest.

In a Bernama report today, the Home Ministry said that the news which has been circulating on the social media is a hoax.

Home Minister press secretary, Brig Gen Fadzlette Othman Merican Idris Merican informed that the Royal Malaysian Police would issue an official statement should there be any developments on the matter.

Bernama also reported that the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, in a message delivered via WhatsApp said he did not receive any information on the matter.

On Friday, a Facebook account believed to be Ali’s had a posting stating that he had been detained by Interpol and would arrive in Malaysia by noon today.

Ali faces sedition charges for allegedly insulting the Malaysian monarchy on his Facebook.

He was arrested on September 8 and released after 22 days being detained on Sept 29. Ali made a swift escape to Stockholm, exiting the country through the Malaysia-Thailand border in Danok.

Ali and controversial blogger, Alvin Tan had their passports revoked by the Immigration Department earlier this week as a move to warn those who break the laws and make controversial statements.

The duo had been asked to surrender their passports at a nearest Malaysian Immigration department or Malaysian Mission.
