The police have detained a teenage woman who allegedly dumped her newborn baby girl at Kampung Parit Lubok Darat in Semerah, Batu Pahat early today.
Batu Pahat police chief ACP Abdul Wahib Musa said the arrest of the 19-year-old suspect followed information from an individual who found the baby near his house verandah.
He said initial investigations revealed the suspect had given birth about 12.30am after suffering abdominal pains in front of a house before she left the baby there and returned to her house.
Later, she discarded the placenta and umbilical cord by the side of her house, he added.
Abdul Wahib said the suspect, and her baby weighing 3.1kg were sent to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital for treatment.
The case is investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by intentionally abandoning the child.
Upon conviction, the offender is liable to be imprisoned for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or both.
