Woman dies in shophouse fire

A female worker died and her teenage daughter was injured in a fire at a shophouse in Greentown here early today, reported the Ipoh Fire and Rescue Service.

Its chief of operations, P. Samasuvam, said Norhashimah Mohd Ismail, 48, died of smoke inhalation after she was trapped on the first floor of the building in the 4 am fire.

Her daughter, Siti Nur Ayu Ismail, 17, who had also been sleeping on the first floor, escaped with slight injuries, he said.

The cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained, he said.
