A woman found out the hard way the penalty for intentionally obstructing traffic policemen from carrying out their duties.
The Magistrate's Court sentenced Nur Haslinda Abdullah, 29, a cook, to five months jail after she pleaded guilty to not following police's orders to give way to Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar's convoy that was heading to Mersing on Sept 9.
She committed the offence at KM12 Jalan Tebrau-Kota Tinggi here at 4.30pm on that day.
Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Alias said he was handing down the punishment to serve a lesson that the people must respect the authorities and obey the laws.
He ordered the jail sentence to run from today.
The accused had not only disobeyed police outriders' instructions to give way but also accelerated her vehicle and in the process nearly hit one of the outriders, before she was caught.
She was liable to be jailed up to two years or fined a maximum of RM10,000 for the offence.
At a separate Magistrate's Court, she was ordered to be jailed a day and fined RM5,000 in default eight months jail by Magistrate Salina Omar for the reckless driving.
The court also suspended her driving licence for two years.
The accused who came with her husband was not represented while deputy public prosecutor Siti Asmah Zainal Arifin appeared for the prosecution. -- BERNAMA
