Woman jailed, fined for stealing in surau

An event manager was sentenced to a month's jail and fined RM500, in default five days' jail, by the Magistrate's Court here today for stealing at a place of worship.
Magistrate Umzarul An-Nur Umar handed down the sentence on Siti Amira Abdullah, 22, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
She was charged with stealing a bag belonging to a waitress, Nor Syafiqa Rushdan, 18, at a surau at Quill City Mall, Jalan Sultan Ismail here at about 6.30pm last Sept 20.
The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to 10 years, and is liable to fine, and for subsequent offence, with imprisonment and fine, or whipping, if found guilty.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa, while Siti Amira was unrepresented. -- Bernama
