Sarawak Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wong Soon Koh who was responsible for moving the motion to disqualify Dr Ting Tiong Choon as Pujut as an assemblyman during the State Legislative Assembly sitting on May 12, said he will not comment on the merits of the court's decision on the matter as he is not a lawyer.
"The court has decided and we respect its decision," he said in a statement here.
He explained that the motion he tabled in the assembly as a ministerial motion in his capacity as a state minister and Cabinet member.
"It was not something done at my own whim and therefore, before deciding on the next course of action, I will have to consult with the Chief Minister and the State Attorney-General," he added.
On May 12, Dr Ting, from the DAP, was disqualified from being a Sarawak assemblyman as he was alleged to have previously acquired dual citizenship (Malaysia and Australia) but today the High Court in its ruling overturned the the Sarawak Legislative Assembly' s decision and reinstated Dr Ting as the rightful elected assemblyman for Pujut.
