The trend of youth including students bringing in synthetic drugs for entertainment in the small town of Danok in Thailand has reached distressing levels.
Kedah Border Security Agency (Aksem) commander Abdul Latif Abd Rahman said based on the agency''s statistics, 99 per cent of the drug seizures involved youth aged between 19 and 30.
"Most of them were nabbed trying to bring in drugs such as syabu and erimin into Danok and we believe the drugs are used for themselves and their friends waiting on the other side," he told Bernama.
He said the trend was very worrying considering they comprised higher education institution and college students who could easily go to the town less than one kilometre away from the country''s border.
"With just RM10 they could obtain a border pass and pass a night in Danok for entertainment and other purposes," he said.
Abdul Latif said as at March this year, Kedah Aksem had recorded drug seizure worth RM25,350 and they all involved youths.
Meanwhile Kedah National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) director Mohammad Nazer Mustafa who admitted the issue said integrated operations conducted frequently found youth going to Danok during weekends.
He said there were 105 drug cases among school students as at March this year compared to 344 cases for the whole of last year and 374 in 2015.
According to him, 90 per cent of the cases recorded involved syabu. - BERNAMA
