KUALA LUMPUR:It is time for UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to provide clear guidelines and direction to all members related to the party's cooperation with its political rivals.
Its Deputy President, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said a firm political consensus should be produced to alleviate the anxiety, dissatisfaction and anger of members towards the way UMNO was treated in the recent Sabah State Election (PRN).
According to him, the results of the Sabah PRN showed that the strategy and political cooperation that UMNO has sealed was not profitable and even further alienates its role in the state.
“From a party that has ruled Sabah for 27 years, UMNO is currently only an isolated political player in the GRS (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah) coalition.
“What happened in Sabah requires UMNO to rethink its political approach.
"If Sabah is used as a basis, the survival, influence and visibility of UMNO will continue to be affected in the short term and eventually weaken UMNO in the long run," he said in a statement on Thursday.
He added that UMNO's sacrifice in giving its strongest seat to certain parties has affected its strength.
“Towards the future, UMNO must stop being nostalgic that the political cooperation through the 'Sheraton Move' is to save the country. That episode is over.
“The next episode is how UMNO will steer the country, give it leadership and create a better future for Malaysia through Barisan Nasional and not other political platforms.
“We will be evaluated by what we can offer to Malaysia. It is not how much we sacrifice for a particular party or the survival of the Perikatan Nasional (PN),” he said.
He stressed that if Umno has to be alone with Pas in the Muafakat Nasional and BN in facing the next General Election (GE), it has to be decided as soon as possible so that preparations can be made.
"Let us start now, to bring UMNO back to its true path.
"Let us work hard in order to redevelop UMNO so as to make it trusted and supported by the Malays and Malaysians," he said.
