UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz’s views on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and its links to depreciation of the Ringgit must be taken seriously.

Mohd Shafie said Zeti’s views are based on her vast knowledge in the field.

Met at the Hari Raya AidilAdha celebration at his constituency, Shafie said the trust of investors and international community will be affected if the issue is not resolved.

On Monday, Zeti said the issues lingering over 1MDB needs to be resolved before the ringgit depreciation can recover and the economy continues to progress.

“We do not need another scandal. We do need a political uncertainty. All issues pertaining to 1MDB should be resolved. It is only then we can see the ringgit rebound,” Zeti said at a panel discussion called “The state of the Malaysian Economy and Investment”.

1MDB, meanwhile had refuted Zeti's statement, adding that apart from Ringgit, other currencies like the Norwegian Krone, the Australian Dollar and the Russian Rouble have also depreciated following the abrupt fall in oil prices.

Other factors, it said, include expectation of rising US interest rates and concerns over the global economic slowdown in emerging markets.
