Every Malaysian citizen must demonstrate a strong patriotic spirit towards the country despite the moderate celebration being held this year following the MH370 and MH17 tragedies.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the historic day must be celebrated with full patriotic spirit and not spent solely with activities such as sleeping.
He said the people should not continue to be downcast following the disappearance of MH370 since March 8 and the shooting down of MH17 in east Ukraine on July 17.
"Continuing to brood will not solve any problem, in fact, we have decided on Aug 22 for mourning and many events for the Merdeka celebration had been toned down, for example no fireworks display on the eve of Merdeka, to respect the victims and their families," he said.
He said this to reporters after flagging off three Merdeka Tour Convoys at the Putra World Trade centre (PWTC) here, today.
The first convoy involved 30 motorcycles and 18 cars headed to Jerantut, Pahang while two more convoys with 15 four-wheel drive vehicles and 24 high-powered motorcycles headed to Kemaman, Terengganu.
Ahmad Shabery said, to date, he was satisfied with all the preparations for the 57th Merdeka celebration tomorrow.
"I also thank all quarters for not politicising the Merdeka celebration this time which is to be held to unite the hearts and feelings of the people," he added.
