Get lucky

I am talking literally about the act of ‘getting’ lucky.

Is it possible for someone to get lucky, or is a person just is lucky.

I have a confession: I consider myself as a lucky individual. This is not because my horoscope tells me so, although it is proven for Sagittarians to generally be lucky, thanks to the planet Pluto.

So are these merely a series of coincidence? I believe the word we’re looking for is serendipity, or happy accidents. You bump into these moments that benefit you.

But instead of putting it all on the shoulders of serendipity and fate alone, let me try and make it scientific; so that you too can increase your chances of getting lucky! (Read: I’m nice. Which brings us to my first tip.) Here are five key tips, ‘cause any legit list always have five.

#1: Be nice

It helps when you are nice to people. If you have something, share it. If you’re good at something, you teach. Sharing is the gateway to luck. First, you increase the rapport with the person you share it with which in return makes him/her like you better. Second, it builds a positive perception of people towards you. And guess what, people like to help people they like. So in this case, nice guys finish first.

#2: Be optimistic

Not the fake kind, but try to really internalize and train yourself to be positive. When you have the right mindset, the right things will come to you at the right time. If you are always pessimistic, and always think of the worst of everything, you will sabotage good things that come your way. For example, you go on a date with a guy, and he turns out to be one of the grossest person you’ve ever met. Look on the brightside, at least he paid for dinner!

#3: Be an opportunist

When you are faced with a problem, try to turn the problem into an opportunity. Ok, so you hit a road bump. What do you do about it? So you’re in a train after a long day at work and suddenly the train stopped. Technical difficulties – as Malaysians always refer it as. You can choose to grumble and complain on Twitter, OR you can get to know the cute passenger sitting around you. I always choose the latter.

#4: Look the part

Finally, something shallow. Hah!

Ok, look vulnerable. Yes, it helps. People are more likely to help those who look like they “need” help rather than people who look like they’re Superman. Just look it even if you don’t need anything. Another thing that helps is to probably look convincing and persuasive. Note the word look in that sentence, as opposed to having to actually be it.

#5: WOW factor

You either have it, or you don’t. I’m lucky enough to have born with and embraced it, but if you don’t, fret not. Everyone has it, they just don’t know it. Find what’s unique about you (thumbprint is out of question) and milk on it like it’s the antidote to everything uncool. When you know you have something others don’t, you become confident about yourself, and most importantly, you become irresistible. People can’t resist you and it makes them want to please you. Get what I mean?

So there you go. Try these five things and trust me, your luck-o-meter will increase by 200%.
