Three Perak state assemblymen today declared they were quitting their respective parties and elected to be independent assemblymen.
The three were Tronoh assemblyman, Yong Choo Kiong (DAP), Titi Serong assemblyman, Hasnul Zulkarnain Abd Munaim (Amanah) and Buntong assemblyman, A. Sivasubramaniam (DAP).
The three made the announcement shortly after a special media conference by the Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who announced that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Umno and PAS have agreed to form a new coalition.
Choo Kiong explained that the move was made not on the basis of pursuing personal political interests but to ensure the rights of the people in their respective areas were protected and not marginalized under the opposition.
"I could see that the formation of Perikatan Nasional is not really perfect without the presence of the representatives of the Indians and the Chinese.
"As the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government's political game has collapsed and the rights of the people will be sidelined, eventually the people in Perak who chose PH have become victims.
"That is why we have decided to leave the party and will support the Menteri Besar so that the rights of the people in Perak will be protected," he told a press conference on Monday.
Choo Kiong claimed that he has also met and spoke with Ahmad Faizal, who is also Tambun Member of Parliament and Chenderiang Assemblyman, before today's special press conference.
He added despite the rumours that Ahmad Faizal would be in the Cabinet, he was confident that the post of Menteri Besar would still be held by the Chenderiang assemblyman.
