Kota Siputeh state assemblyman Datuk Abu Hassan Sharif has been appointed as Jerlun UMNO acting chief to replace Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir who was sacked from the party.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said, the Ayer Hitam state constituency, still being held by Mukhriz, would become the adopted seat of the state UMNO liaison committee.
"I will give special attention to ensure all needs, community's welfare and development agenda in the state constituency will continue to be provided," he said in a statement here today.
On Friday, the UMNO supreme council unanimously sacked Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz from the party with immediate effect while UMNO vice president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal's membership was suspended.
Ahmad Bashah, who is also Kedah UMNO liaison chairman, said the sacking showed that UMNO as a party had a strong tradition that advocates the practice of loyalty and togetherness.
He said Kedah UMNO was always committed and fully supported the UMNO supreme council and party leadership for the sake of continuity.
"It is regrettable that after various opportunities were given to the three individuals, who have contributed so much, they can suddenly sit together and conspired with the opposition.
"This has caused anxiety, confusion and disunity among all levels of leadership and grassroots," he said.
