Amanah President, Mohamad Sabu said he was satisfied by the turnout at the anti-GST (Goods and Services Tax) at Dataran Merdeka yesterday.
Mohamad or popularly known as Mat Sabu said at the same time, the rally achieved its goals with the participation of people from various levels of society.
“The rally yesterday achieved its goals and the turnout was satisfactory even though the Tionghua community was celebrating Qinming and most of them went back to their hometown,” he said after launching the first edition of Amanah’s weekly tabloid at its headquarters, here, Sunday.
However, he admitted that many could not join the rally due to financial restraints.
“The turnout kampung folks was quite low, maybe due to economic problems, especially rubber tappers who could not afford the travel fares to Kuala Lumppur,” he said.
Mat Sabu also denied that Amanah failed to mobilise supporters to attend the rally.
“That was our target. We didn’t plan for a rally as huge as Bersih because we only had limited time.
“We only had one week to organise the rally. Unlike Bersih, they had six months to do it. So the turnout at the protest was satisfactory,” he said.
Meanwhile, Amanah information chief Abdul Khalid Samad said that the rally was attended by more than 10,000 people.
“More than 10,000 people were present in the afternoon but because of the sweltering heat, many of them did not stay until the end.
The anti-GST rally was also attened by former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife un Dr Siti Hasmah.
