Barisan Nasional's (BN) fate is not determined by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's support, said Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.
"If we look at the results of the 2008 general election, Dr Mahathir's criticism against Tun Abdullah Badawi becoming Prime Minister brought little impact on the support towards BN.
"But in the 2013 general election, Dr Mahathir supported BN, but the results as like what we see now," said Shahrir.
Asked whether he felt that Dr Mahathir's support towards BN is irrelevant, Shahrir stressed that his statement was based on facts.
"I only mentioned the election results. Everyone can make their own comparisons. They're all facts," he told a press conference at Parliament, Tuesday.
Shahrir was asked about BN's confidence in gaining support from the people for of the next general election.
BN is facing various issues including the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the RM2.6 billion donation and the possibility of a plot to topple the government.
