Devamany to still contest for MIC no 2 post this November

Despite calls from certain party members for him to back out, MIC former vice-president Datuk Seri S.K. Devamany said he would stick to his decision to contest for the deputy president post in the party's re-elections in November.

Devamany, who is also Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker, said he would be submitting his nomination form this Sunday to contest for the post.

"I will not withdraw my decision...(because) this is my turn to go for the party's number two post. After party president Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam, I am the number two leader in the party's 2009 Central Working Committee (CWC) hierarchy.

"That is why I've decided to contest for the (deputy president) post," he said when asked by reporters on the matter after attending the simultaneous opening of the MIC Youth, Wanita, Putera and Puteri Annual Assemblies by Dr Subramaniam, here, today.

The MIC re-elections will see a straight contest for the party deputy president post between Devamany and MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan, as both leaders had announced their intentions to go for the number two post.

The MIC Supreme Council has set this coming Sunday (Oct 25), for the nomination of candidates for the party's top posts of deputy president, three vice-presidents and 23 CWC members.

Re-elections for the main posts will be held on Nov 6, followed by the party's Annual General Assembly the following day at the Malaysia Agriculture Exposition Park, Serdang (MAEPS).

The Registrar of Societies had ordered the MIC to hold re-elections after nullifying the party elections held in November 2013, following complaints from members on irregularities during the elections.
