UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reminded former national and party leaders not to become 'old holy books' who are not respected by the present generation.
Without naming anybody, he said leaders should become 'holy books' who are respected and become a reference point for the present generation despite no longer holding important post.
"If we have become old holy books that cannot be read, let the present generation spare us from tear and put us on a high place.
"Old holy books have to sit quietly. Do not litter the floor. I am not referring to anyone, just reminding myself and friends," he said when opening the Paya Besar UMNO division Charity Night 2016 here, tonight.
The event was attended by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Deputy Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Ismail Abdul Muttalib, Paya Besar UMNO division chief Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail and 3,600 party members.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister urged former leaders to appreciate new leaders who received the trust and strong support from those at the grassroots.
"Remember that our position was not solely due to our wisdom, strength or contribution. We were tested as our organisation was divided and had to be re-registered. That's all history.
"Our generation has to strengthen the party because when we are strong, only then the leadership will become strong."
Zahid reminded the present leaders not to be afraid to face the lies as they would go back to haunt those who spread them.
"This was proven to leaders who are no longer with us. During his time, we are asked to support the party leadership as it is shared and not a personal right.
"We were given advice during winding up debate but due to poor memory or biological factors, they returned to haunt the speakers.
"If we shamed people, the others will shame us," said Zahid.
He said today's leaders should adopt a 'win-win' stance, be fair to everyone and not make judgment based on self or family interest.
