The 14th general election (GE14) will be a fight for survival or death for UMNO following the series of attacks made against the party.
Johor UMNO liaison chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the party should not take lightly the attacks as they were not only from UMNO's traditional enemies, but also by former colleagues in UMNO.
"The coming general election will be the most stiff and will determine UMNO's survival, or death, and we have to defend the party, more so now, where we are being faced with continuous challenges.
"UMNO is today is being criticised and laughed at, and those who attack us are not our traditional political enemies, but people who used to be with us, be part of us, lead us and know how we move, operate and think," he added.
The Johor Menteri Besar said this when opening the Johor UMNO veterans annual conference here Saturday.
As such, he said, Johor UMNO members should ensure the party remained relevant, not only for the Malays, but also the non-Malays.
In SUNGAI PETANI, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said Kedah UMNO was determined to ensure a two-thirds win for the party in the coming general election.
To realise that, he said the focus would be on enhancing party solidarity and election machinery.
"It also requires cooperation of all UMNO leaders and members, including the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings," he said in his keynote address at the Kedah UMNO convention Saturday.
Ahmad Bashah, who is also Kedah UMNO liaison chairman, said the challenge facing UMNO was huge with the presence of an anti-government movement which was led by former UMNO leaders themselves.
In MELAKA, State UMNO liaison chairman Datuk Seri Idris Harun said the state UMNO would focus on issues pertaining to the economy of the Malays and preparation for the coming general election at the party assembly to be held end of the month.
He was met by reporters after the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 78th birthday celebration of the Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob on Saturday. --Bernama
