Let's follow Singapore, dissolve parliament and get people's mandate - Mohamad Hasan

Mohamad said the dissolution of parliament needed to be done immediately to ensure the government had a good and credible mandate.

The Rantau state assemblyman said since its independence Malaysia has never been in a very unstable political position as what it was facing now.

"Malaysia's prosperity and competitiveness depend heavily on its political stability. Political stability will impact and influence many things, including influx of investors, economic activity and social order.

"The current situation has made it difficult for the government to pass a number of critical bills including tabling the budget to restore the country from the current economic downturn.

"All efforts to revitalize the Malaysian economy, create jobs and boost competition will not be possible without a stable government and parliament that can play the role of checks and balances," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Mohamad said the country could not continue to be dragged on by the uncertainties and the possibility of a change of government within a few months.

He said that only a government with a mandate and a comfortable majority in Parliament could function well and focus all its efforts on restoring Malaysia from all the unprecedented challenges.

According to Mohamad, as a country that practices parliamentary democracy, the real power in a democratic system such as in Malaysia is on the people rather than on the bloc of Parliament members who are "shaped by the comfort and desire of politicians".

"Therefore, return the power to the people and let them determine the way forward for their beloved homeland," he added.
