MIC to amend its constitution to strengthen party structure

MIC is looking at amending its constitution in a bid to strengthen the party structure, said the party appointed chairman for the constitutional amendment committee, Datuk S. Murugesan.

Murugesan said among the amendments include the expansion of the party voting base as well as having a state level elections.

"Currently, state office bearers are fully appointed by the party's leadership. We are looking at electing the state office bearers instead," he said, adding that this move is to address grouses from the grassroots level on the matter.

Murugesan however said the amendment is still in its infancy stage and a special committee, which he is spearheading, is in the midst of preparing a draft amendment.

"The committee will travel around the nation to consult party members and stakeholders on the matter. We need extensive consultation. We have done comparative studies with other component parties.

"The amendment is not targeted at any general elections but it is aimed at serving the party's interest in the long run," he said, adding that the feedback from the stakeholders will be presented to the party's Central Working Committee.

Meanwhile, MIC secretary-general A. Prakash Rao said the party's 68th Annual General Meeting (AGM) will kick off with the Women, Youth, Putera and Puteri AGM on Sunday (Dec 7). To be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the AGM will be held on Dec 13 and 14.
