MIC acting president Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam has expressed his appreciation to the majority of MIC branches as despite being from different factions, had filed their nominations in the interests of the party's future.
He said this was indeed an achievement for the party, which showed that the majority of MIC branches were united and were working in tandem with the current leadership of the party.
Citing an example, Dr Subramaniam said he was also very pleased with the decision of Melaka MIC chairman and Melaka MIC executive committee (Exco) member Datuk M. Mahadevan Sanassy to participate in the nomination process this morning.
"It is heartening to note that the MIC branches and grassroots have decided to rally behind the party in the interest of its future.
"This is the true spirit of MIC, based on which the party was formed and nurtured," he said in a statement here yesterday.
Mahadevan filed his nomination for the branch chairman post for his branch Paya Rumput in the Tangga Batu division in Melaka, Saturday.
Dr Subramaniam also said he is deeply honoured and pleased to witness such overwhelming support and cooperation from all segments of the party extended towards his team's leadership.
"I urge the remaining branches to stay united and take part in these nominations at their respective centres setting aside our own differences in opinion and unite for the sake of our party and the future of Indian community," he said.
Dr Subramaniam who also filed his nomination for the branch chairman post of MIC Ujong Pasir (Melaka), said of 126 branches in Melaka, 110 of them have filed their respective nominations Saturday, which is almost 87.3 per cent of the total number of branches.
Yesterday, in Kedah a total of 236 branches (80 per cent) out of total of 334 branches took part in the nomination process.
The branch nominations for the faction led by Dr Subramaniam started yesterday while a similar process under his rival Datuk Seri G. Palanivel took place on July 9.
Palanivel loyalist, Datuk S. Sothinathan had said that 2,241 of some 3,400 MIC branches took part in the July 9 nominations which, according to him, indicated their support for Palanivel.
