MIC sets September 6 for presidential election, August 21 for nomination

The MIC Interim 2009 Central Working Committee (CWC) aligned to party acting president Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam has set Sept 6 for presidential election.

MIC secretary-general A.Sakthivel said the CWC meeting held yesterday also fixed Aug 21 for the presidential nomination.

"The Interim CWC of the MIC also passed a resolution to stop MIC leaders at all levels from attending any function organised by the illegal CWC (led by former MIC president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel).

"The Interim CWC 2009 resolved that any member who participates in any nomination or election conducted by this illegal CWC can be subjected to disciplinary action and can be denied the right to participate in the nominations and elections of the official Interim CWC of 2009," he said in a statement here, today.

Sakthivel noted according to the MIC constitution the president was elected by all the branch chairmen and the branch nomination held from the July 10 to 12 saw 2685 branch chairmen filing in their nominations.

He stressed that the State Branch Election Dispute Committee which has been entrusted with the task of investigating and deciding on disputes and appeals has recommended that another 260 branches be allowed to file in their nominations.

"The date for this nomination has been fixed for Aug 1 (and) in the event of a contest it will be held on the Aug 9," he added.

Before this, Palanivel's camp called for nominations for the post of party president on Aug 2.

The 68-year-old party split into two factions following differences in opinion between Palanivel and Dr Subramaniam after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) issued a notice on Dec 5, last year requesting the party to hold re-lections.
