No need to limit PM's tenure then as party comfortable with leadership - Mukhriz

Parti Bersatu Pribumi Malaysia (PPBM) vice-president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said there was a reason why UMNO did not propose to limit the prime minister's tenure when his father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister.

He said the party was comfortable with his father's leadership and as such it was not in the interest of the party to do so.

Mukhriz said the constitutional concept in Malaysia all this while is that a prime minister will remain in office as long as he is given the mandate by the people like what had happened when Tun Mahathir became the fourth prime minister and served the country for 22 years.

"This is not an issue in UMNO because usually the UMNO president is the prime minister. It is not in UMNO's interest to limit the tenure of the prime minister,"

Mukhriz said this during a press conference with AMANAH deputy president Salahuddin Ayub at Wisma AMANAH Negara on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Salahuddin explained the two-term limit for the prime minister has been agreed to in principle by PAS and DAP.

Regarding the fate of Pakatan Rakyat in Sabah, Salahuddin said the issue will be discussed during PKR presidential council meeting later this week.

"Other issues, especially regarding the resignation of the post, will be discussed during the Presidential meeting on the 12th," said Salahudin.

Both parties have also rejected the possibility of merging with a new party that will soon be established by Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal after getting the approval from the Registrar of Societies.
