KUALA LUMPUR:There is no need to think about the issue of a successor to the Prime Minister for now, said Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

What is more important, he added, is to focus fully on efforts to help the government address the issue of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The Ketereh Member of Parliament said once the pandemic has begun to subside, then Parliament should be dissolved to give way to the General Election for the people to choose who is eligible.

"No need to think of a replacement for now. We rally to help the government first.

“When COVID-19 has subsided, then immediately dissolve Parliament and hand it over to the people. The United States has many more COVID-19 cases and they also have elections.

“Give an opportunity to the Prime Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) to save the country and the lives of the people first. I believe the Prime Minister (will) hand it over to the people,” he added.

Annuar, who is also the Federal Territories Minister, said this through a tweet on his Twitter, referring to a portal report on the Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) proposal to nominate its Protem Chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the next Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, in a press conference this morning, he was reported to have said that UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had already met Muhyiddin yesterday.

Although he did not reveal the details of the meeting, Annuar said, it was to some extent related to the negotiations on the new terms of political cooperation between UMNO and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the context of Muafakat Nasional and Perikatan Nasional.

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan on October 13 was reported to have said that the UMNO Political Bureau had made considerations to withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional.

Apart from that, the Pontian Member of Parliament was reported to have said that the UMNO Political Bureau would give new conditions to Muhyiddin to continue political cooperation through a written agreement.

Meanwhile, Annuar said the Muafakat Nasional meeting at Menara Dato 'Onn tonight will discuss the incorporation of Bersatu into the coalition.

He added that both UMNO president Ahmad Zahid and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang would also attend the meeting.
