There is no need to for a second deputy speaker for the Selangor state assembly as requested by DAP, said PAS information chief Datuk Mahfuz Omar.
Mahfuz said with a short assembly sitting, one deputy speaker is adequate and it would save the state’s spending.
He added that it is different than the Dewan Rakyat sitting which could last until late at night and is held for a longer period.
“The Dewan Rakyat sitting could last up to two months and in one day, it could go on for until late at night, even until 3am. So it is reasonable to rotate between two deputy speakers and one speaker.
“The state assembly sitting is not held until late at night, so one deputy speaker is enough," he said when contacted.
The Pokok Sena MP said that the budget to be used to pay for the second deputy speaker can be used for the people.
Yesterday, PAS and Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen unanimously agreed to reject DAP’s request for a second deputy speaker in the Selangor state assembly.
Selangor Opposition Leader Datuk Shamsudin Lias was reported to say that the call shows that DAP is greedy for power.
Meanwhile, when asked about the state assembly’s approval to cut the salary of the Menteri Besar and exco members, Mahfuz said it was a right move and could cut the state’s spending.
