Holding party election according to the time set by its constitution would prove a level of maturity in UMNO, said political analyst Prof Madya Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.
The Universiti Sains Malaysia School of Social Science's Deputy Dean said this will be a test to see how the party’s interests are maintained despite the internal struggle during party election.
“It can be a reference for outsiders observing the renewal brought by the party,” he said when contacted by Astro AWANI.
Dr Sivamurugan was commenting on the suggestion made by UMNO deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin not to postpone its election soon after the generation election as done before this but to hold it according to the time set by the party’s constitution.
He also suggested for the UMNO constitution to be amended next year to enable younger generation to contribute and play a bigger role in the party.
UMNO held its party election in October, 2013 after it was postponed to pave way for the 13th General Election. The election was initially scheduled to be held in 2012.
The current UMNO leadership mandate will end in 2016 while the current parliament mandate will end in 2018.
Dr Sivamurugan said the rejuvenation process remains to be a big agenda which should be given a focus and the amended constitution will enable youth to move forward in politics.
“It is a step which will be recognised. I believe it may also be time to limit the period to hold office for certain posts so that it will provide a bigger space for the younger generation to appear and show their capability within a stipulated time frame.
“These drastic actions show that UMNO is ready for change, in line with the current political landscape,” he said.
Dr Sivamurugan expressed hope that Muhyiddin’s call is taken seriously as the deputy president wants the UMNO’s spirit to remain.
“Whether its old or new members, the UMNO spirit must be pervaded and not merely just being a member who does not understand the party’s mandate,” he said.
When asked what are best rejuvenation steps for the survival of the party, this is what he said;
“Muhyiddin has analysed that today’s political landscape, which needs new ideas and thoughts suitable for youth.
“The internet and social media are the platforms to generate new ideas. There should be new leaders mentored by old leaders and those who are in powers could take a step back without being forced to let go of their posts.
Dr Sivamurugan said the presence of new leader can be icons and with the support of old leaders, it will be easier to start this transitional process.
