No member of parliament (MP) is entitled to special treatment during the debate session in the Dewan Rakyat even though he has served the country.
MP for Padang Rengas Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz stressed that all MPs should be prepared to be criticized during the debate session.
He explained that if there were any MPs who do not want to be attacked during the debate, the best way is to resign.
"We have to remember, even though we are a great person or have contributed a lot, but if we agree to enter the ring, then we have to be prepared for any eventuality.
"So there are no two rules in the Dewan Rakyat, they will all be treated similarly. If you rise to speak and face continuos criticisms, that must be accepted because no one is forcing him to become a member of parliament," he told Astro AWANI recently.
He was commenting on the views of some parties who questioned the treatment given to former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when debating the motion to change the Speaker of the House on Monday.
Nazri said that those who disputed the matter need to understand that the Langkawi MP cannot expect special treatment just because he is a former prime minister.
"He offered himself to be a candidate in Langkawi and when he is no longer the prime minister, so he is an ordinary MP like me, he has to accept.
"(He) can't expect a better treatment because he is a former prime minister, eh… there is no such thing, enter the ring and be prepared.
"Do not say this person is rude because there are no two rules for MPs, they are all the same, there is no one rule for us, one rule for Tun, it is not possible.
"If he does not want to be treated like that, the honorable way is he has to resign," he said.
Nazri explained that Dr Mahathir could not expect UMNO MPs to remain silent if the former prime minister gave a bad impression of the party during the debate session.
"If he attacks us like saying UMNO is disgusting, I cannot accept it because it is the disgusting UMNO that has made him the prime minister for 22 years.
"If there is any MP whom he is angry him, mention it (his identity), like Padang Rengas MP, mention it but do not mention UMNO," he added.
Nazri also said that Dr Mahathir's action of labelling UMNO as disgusting had caused the party members in the village to be hurt as well.
