Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Adnan Yaakob today stated his intention to not contest in the upcoming 14th General Election (GE14).
Speaking at the Kelantan UMNO Ketereh division meeting, he said he has been holding the post for too long and it was time to make way for new blood.
"My decision to not contest is voluntary. I feel that I have been the MB long enough and it is time that someone else shoulder the responsibility."
He said, as the longest-serving Menteri Besar – 17 years – he also advised his successor to continue helping the people and maintain the special relationship that Pahang UMNO have with the UMNO Ketereh division.
Meanwhile, at a Press conference later, Adnan, who has been the Pelangai assemblyman since 1986, reiterated that his decision to not contest in GE14 was not made due to pressure by any party.
"My decision is solely based on my logic and wisdom after being in politics for so long. I might even retire.
"On the matter of my political successor, I have none yet. But a successor will be in place when the time calls for it," he said.
However, he said he would not be the one to determine on who his successor would be.
Nevertheless, Adnan added that whomever the person might be, he needed to receive the consent of the Pahang Sultan, supported by the Prime Minister and have the trust of the Pahang State Legislative Assembly.
