PAS today formed a political alliance with Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan), making it the third political force in the country.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the new Opposition block embraces a moderate principle and approach and will fight along Islamic values.

"We reject extremists approach," he said when announcing the new pact today.

"We fight during election but other times we will approach the government and advise them on how to lead better," he added.

Meanwhile, Ikatan president Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir denied that his party is riding on PAS's popularity.

While admitting that the party is still young, Abdul Kadir said Ikatan share the same principles as PAS.

"There are too many problems in the country right now and we don't have time to keep fighting each other for personal agenda," he said.

"Right now, the focus is to solve the woes of the people," he added.
