PAS would lose the elections in Selangor especially if the Islamist party leaves the Pakatan coalition, said former Selangor menteri besar Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib.
The PAS Lajnah’s Information and Media Relations deputy chairman added, even if PR were to win, PAS stood to lose at least 10 seats as Chinese voters would not vote for them.
As such, he said, PAS should refrain from thinking they can stand on their own because the number of votes they had won in the state is not that high.
“In Selangor, PAS did not win by a large majority. As such PAS should remain in Pakatan Rakyat, their alliance must continue,” Muhammad said during a debate entitled ‘Wacana Merdeka’ held at the University of Selangor (UNISEL) in Shah Alam on Saturday.
He said he understood the voting pattern in Selangor very well after helming the top spot in the state for 10 years.
On rumours and suggestions that PAS join UMNO, Muhammad advised the public to take heed from PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat's message “to dismiss” the speculations as false.
He said, UMNO only needs PAS when it is weak and will dismiss the party when it has gained strength.
“If UMNO and PAS unite, it will only be a temporary measure. When UMNO and Barisan Nasional regain back their power, let’s say in Selangor, they will ask PAS to leave,” he said referring to UMNO’s dismissal of PAS in 1978.
