Barisan Nasional (BN) will draw up a new strategy to approach the Chinese voters in efforts to win the by-election for the state seat of Pujut, Sarawak, to be held on July 4.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Women Secretary Datuk Nancy Shukri said BN had the opportunity to shine and win the by-election in Pujut that has about 68 per cent Chinese voters.
This followed last year's state election, where BN candidate Datuk Hii King Chiong narrowly lost to DAP's Dr Ting Tiong Choon with a small majority of 1,759 votes, she said.
"Therefore, we need to plan carefully and devise a strategy that is closely related to the economy, such as upgrading the economic status of the Chinese community in the area," she told reporters after launching the Administrative and Diplomatic Service (PTD) Women Officers Fit programme at the compound of the Ministry of Youth and Sports here today.
In addition, Nancy, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister''s Department, said the selection of the right candidate was important to ensure that BN would win the by-election.
The Election Commission today announced that the Pujut by-election will be held on July 4 while nomination is on June 20, following the disqualification of incumbent assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon of the DAP on May 12 over dual citizenship.
